Ruth E Dixon is an English poet and broadcast journalist. Originally from Peterborough, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in European Studies at the University of Humberside in Hull in 1994, then a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism at Sheffield Hallam University in 1998.
Ruth spent the next couple of years freelancing in TV and radio including for John Peel’s Radio 4 programme Home Truths, before taking up a Reporter post with Channel 5 News. In 2001 she returned to Hull to work as Breakfast Presenter for the local BBC radio station.
After becoming a Mum, Ruth produced and presented a variety of news-based radio programmes. She also presented the late TV bulletin on BBC Look North. It was through her weekend radio show that her passion for spoken word ignited.
Ruth began performing on the open mic circuit in Hull where she developed her own breed of poetry cabaret. She has since taken her show to the Edinburgh Fringe and continues to perform as a duo with her husband to whoever will have them. She lives in Barton Upon Humber with her husband, two children and pet dog.
Ruth’s blog, The Real Housewife of Scunthorpe (http://therealhousewifeofscunthorpe.blogspot.co.uk/) is a quirky take on life “up north”. She draws on her family life, wanderlust, her experiences of working with children in care and her interest in mental health issues. Ruth is passionate about breaking stigma and believes, no matter what your upbringing or where you’re from, everyone deserves a fair chance.
If the campervan starts, this spring/summer Ruth is touring her new poetry cabaret show, The Shallow Depths. You can find out more at www.ruthedixon.co.uk.
