My Writing Life

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. That’s not to say I’ve always been a writer, I’ve just always put pen or pencil to paper when the mood demands. In the playground at school, at the park with mates, on the bus or train, when my kids were born, or when I’m walking alone in the Wolds, there will always be something that I want to remember, or something I feel compelled to express. Some people take photos, some people paint – me, I write it down. Most times on scraps of paper that are later lost. But just the act of writing, of ordering my thoughts, makes sure those moments stay in my mind. And it does stay there. Fermenting, gestating, until at some point there comes a song or poem or a story – or maybe nothing at all. But that’s ok too. For as long as I keep writing I’m keeping all those memories and moments alive, and maybe one day there’ll be a printed poem and that moment will survive. Until then I’ll just keep writing.

Biography

Simon works part-time to pay the bills and spends the rest of his time walking, writing, singing, playing guitar, painting and basically dreaming his life away. He’s been in many bands since his school days, racking up thousands of LP and CD sales. His most successful band is Merlin’s Keep, who he is still writing songs for today. He has two children’s books in print (from the Earthwood series, collaboration with illustrator Tim Michael). His second collection of poetry will be available later this year.
