My Writing Life
I’ve always had a thing for making up stories. Just to qualify that – I’m not an habitual liar, I just liked writing stories. English was my favourite subject at school and probably my best. But to actually make the decision to pursue publication was something that I didn’t even consider until I was at the third draft of my first novel.
I am a singer-songwriter and vocal coach. I came to music late in life. I guess I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I grew up until I finally grew up. Music became my passion and I released my second album just last autumn. As for the writing that came later still. I had an idea for a story, it must have been on my mind for about 10 years. And that’s the truth. I made a couple of attempts to start writing this story but I didn’t have a clue and I couldn’t dedicate enough time to it. So it took a back seat in a two seater car.
As a songwriter I write a mini story in all of my songs and over the years the need to extend a story beyond three verses and chorus grabbed hold of me. The story in the back seat reared its head and I was off. I had no idea how to write a novel but I went round telling everyone that that was exactly what I was doing. Luckily everyone forgot about these declarations and just let me get on with it.
Somewhere along the line this novel started to take shape and I invited two people to read it. Yes they were close to me but both said they liked it. It may have been vanity but I believed them when they said it was good and the idea of being published started to appeal. I released songs so why not my writing? I was eventually lucky enough to get a publishing deal and I’m writing novel two! I have come to love writing and music in equal measure – I only wish my passion could bring in some cash.
